Coming in Hot on The Let Them Theory
We expect to catch flak on this take, so bring it on…
Have you read or heard about the newest book from Mel Robbins, The Let Them Theory?
Let’s just say it’s not for us… but don’t run away just yet!
Mel Robbins is great. Don’t get us wrong.
The core ideas she puts out there are good. And Mel herself delivers them with aplomb when she shows up on podcasts and other appearances. By all accounts, she is an excellent stage speaker.
But maybe all you need is the podcast version instead of the book.
And that’s okay!
Once you listen to her talk about it, maybe you want the extra 336 pages of material to reinforce the idea.
Our issue is the pop psychology effect where people rant and rave about the book but don’t do much with it. It must be put into practice and reinforced with other books, podcasts, talks, etc. You can’t skim across the surface and assume transformation happened.
Are we completely off base… or did we just give you permission to feel the way you really do about the book?
Do We Talk About Tariffs?
As a beast residing in international waters, the Kraken is beyond the law.
Fortunately, this keeps our focus on attacking pirate vessels, chasing narwhals for sport, and other nautical nonsense.
But we do have some real advice…
This company is launching with a bunch of economic distractions going on. It would be easy to fear the time. But what good will that do for us?
Things are going to go up.
They’re going to go down.
Right now, we’re focusing on what we can control. Like pressing send on this email to you, so we can stay in front of our favorite people. And maybe, just maybe, inspire you to do the same.
(We’re happy to press send for you, of course! No tariff shall stop our ability to deliver on the weekly email newsletter for your law firm. Want us to take over or start up your email newsletter? Check out our Work With Us for info.)
Direct to Consumer Brands FAILURE
Podcasts between 2017-2023 were littered with advertisements for Casper mattresses.
Other companies like Warby Parker and Dollar Shave Club were in the mix as well. They all fall under the category of “direct to consumer” (DTC) brands.
The pitch was almost always the same:
We’ve gotten rid of the middleman and passed the savings on to you.
Cool.
The only problem was many of these brands had to pour money into marketing to acquire cheap customers at a blistering pace. Most were built on hoping for rapid scale and then a sale. Some succeeded. Far more failed, either collapsing or currently limping along trying to find a path to profitability.
This video from Modern MBA does a great job of explaining the economics.
One key takeaway is that you don’t want to be in a race to the bottom. Build your law firm on better baseline economics than being “affordable,” because there will always be someone willing to suffer economically even more than you. Not a category you want to win.
